A broad coalition of citizens' groups, Native American Tribes and rural governmental entities filed suit today in the United States District Court in Las Vegas seeking to overturn the United States Department of Interior's decision to approve the Southern Nevada Water Authority's Groundwater Development Project and issue a right-of-way for a nearly 265 mile-long pipeline to suck billions of gallons water away from rural areas and convey it to Las Vegas.

PIPELINE FOES SLAM WATER RULING News that Nevada State Engineer Jason King granted the Southern Nevada Water Authority rights to pump up to 83,988 acre-feet of the groundwater from four eastern Nevada valleys drew a swift and stern response from pipeline opponents, who called the ruling “excessive and ill-considered.”

A new analysis of the protests against well applications filed by the Southern Nevada Water Authority for its proposed groundwater development and pipeline project in eastern Nevada reveal a broad and surprisingly diverse range of interests. The analysis by the Great Basin Water Network (GBWN), a leading opponent of the Las Vegas “Water Grab” found over 2300 individual protests were filed by the April deadlines by 150 individuals and families, 16 ranches and 7 tribes in areas projected to be impacted by SNWA’s water grab.
