WATCH: Crypto, AI Thirsty for Data Centers

During the past few years, GBWN has been watching and tracking developments related to data centers — and the water that is necessary to power them. New and emerging technologies are driving up interest in ways we’ve never seen before. Cryptocurrency and Artificial Intelligence are the principle drivers that regulators are now grapling with as it relates to energy and water.

Recently, GBWN has been working with the National Coalition Against Cryptocurrency and the Sierra Club-Toiyabe Chapter to raise awareness.

The spike in consumer interest from technologies leaves many to wonder: What does society really need to better lives and what can Mother Earth afford to spare to companies that are requesting large amounts of water where not much exists and power that will likley be generated with fossil fuels.

This is just the beginning. But that’s why we are continuing to learn more about who is filing for water rights and where — as well as tracking energy-related regulatory matters.

We have heard from people in New York, Texas, Georgia and elsewhere who are seeing impacts in their water sources and communities. Your town could be next.

Our concerns are not hyperbolic. The Congress recently passed bills to advance crypto currency and AI in ways that will legitimize and grow the uses globally. That means more water and energy demands.

The symbiotic nature of the power-water nexus is important to watch. And that is why GBWN does it.

Watch our recent event and connect with us if you have questions, concerns or suggestions.
