GBWN, Friends of Great Salt Lake, Bear River Canal Company and others protested specious water permit requests along the Great Salt Lake More than a year ago.
And, as was alluded above, the Utah State Engineer denied the brunt of the water requested based on a host of reasons regarding limited availability and a desire to monopolize limited resources in the region. The area, not far from the famed landscape artwork Spiral Jetty in Rozel Flat, has lots of groundwater flow connected to the Great Salt Lake. The state engineer denied applications totaling 350 million gallons annually. And approved about 9 million gallons of annual use.
The denial of applications by the State Engineer was a wise management decision that will likely go unnoticed by most. But for those of us watching closely, this was an important milestone.
