Last week GBWN got a copy of a letter authored by the top water managers in the Lower Basin advocating for the new administration to study and consider the major threats looming at Glen Canyon Dam.
This is an unprecedented public display from Arizona, California and Nevada’s principal negotiators on Colorado River matters. Never has the public heard such a strong indicator that the engineering problems at Glen Canyon Dam pose considerable uncertainty for the communities represented by the signatories — Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and our agricultural hubs in the west.
The news follows years of work from GBWN and partners to raise awareness about the issue that impacts water supplies in communities like Southern Nevada, which have tried pursuing other water supplies in the past because of uncertainty on the Colorado River.
This also signals that the Upper and Lower Basin states are still at an impasse as it relates to long-term, broader management visions for the future of the imperiled river.
We will provide you with more updates soon.
