WHITE PINE COUNTY COMMISSION STEPS UP FOR STEPTOE

In the effort to demand accountability from regulators, the White Pine County Commission is sending  the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission a major message on the pumped storage project jeopardizing the future of an Eastern Nevada community.

In a letter to FERC, White Pine County shared considerable concerns, stating that it “cannot support the project at this time…”

There are more substantial and significant demands within the letter regarding project studies, wildlife, water, agency cooperation and other factors relating to the proposed review for a first-of-its-kind effort under the National Environmental Policy Act.

GBWN and a coalition of community members worked together to develop the Step Up for Steptoe campaign.

This year, widespread project opposition spread in White Pine County as GBWN and partners worked to raise awareness with the Step Up For Steptoe campaign that is backed by extensive scientific research and legal analysis.

It is refreshing to see county officials represent their constituents in this way. The City of Ely has been fighting the good fight for years on this matter.

The county commission’s letter doesn’t mean this is over and deals can’t be struck. But it shows some backbone that’s been missing. We have hope that the new posture of the commission remains upright in its opposition.

The commission’s comments are a good reminder: If you haven’t sent comments to FERC, here is our comment guide.
